Day 71 - prisons, rabbits, and penguins
I went to Robben Island today. It is a small gloomy island about 30 minutes away from Cape Town; it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, mostly due to the fact it was a home to the maximum security prison where Mandela spent 25 years of his life (together with many other anti-apartheid activists).
It used to be a leper colony and then was used as a prison for a few centuries. It was finally turned into museum in 1997.
There's no way to get to the island unless you are coming with a tour. Only a little over 100 people live there permanently, and it is full of rabbits, antelopes, penguins, birds and other wildlife that seem unperturbed by the hoards of tourists visiting the prison.
