Day 2 - Kapstadt

So it turns out I live next door to the French Consulate, which, in turn, is right next to the Planetarium. The National Library and the Court are also on my street - a couple blocks down. The National Gallery is right across the park, maybe about 100 meters away. They are having a Picasso exhibit right now, which I intend to visit shortly. Finally, the Consulate of Italy and Turkish Baths are right around the corner. All in all, everything I could possibly need is right here.

So far it doesn't feel like Africa - not that I know what Africa should feel like, of course. People speak English (with a cute accent) and Afrikaans. School kids wear uniforms. No lions or tigers yet - only on the money. There are Seven-Elevens here, but they sell groceries. Cars drive on the wrong side of the road, but I didn't get run over yet. It must have been that layover in London that fully prepared me for that.

I was told that District Six Museum (the one I will be working at) is about 20 minutes away. I suppose South Africans have a different concept of time - it took me 12, and that was with a few photo stops. They are just not in a hurry.

It's kind of gloomy (winter!) and windy, but not cold. I haven't taken out my big camera yet - not sure if it's a good idea to walk around with it. Haven't actually done much walking around yet anyway. Overall, my exploration of the city may be slightly hampered by the fact that I was told not to go out alone after dark, and it gets dark at 6 pm. Bummer.
